Community-based Fisheries Management Program (CBFMP)

The Community-based Fisheries Management Program is implemented in American Samoa by the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR) to promote the protection and preservation of the Territory’s valuable marine resources. In this program, local villages are empowered and assisted by the DMWR in managing the village marine protected area (VMPA).

The participating village consults the DMWR to develop and implement village by-laws, draw up a village fisheries management plan, and to designate their VMPA. Village members are selected for the monitoring and enforcement committee and receive training from the DMWR.
