Zone de pêche réglementée and Rahui
French Polynesia operates a system of regulated fishing areas - Zone de pêche réglementée (ZPR) - alongside rahui, which are traditional protected areas.
The ZPRs are established by the fisheries administration (Directorate of Marine Resources - DRM) and managed in consultation with local government and communities. In each ZPR, a management committee is created to monitor the marine area and propose how to manage it.
On the island of Moorea, a maritime space management plan (Plan de Gestion de l’Espace Maritime – PGEM) is used to set up a marine protected area in which certain activities are regulated.

Under the environmental code, Rahui is a temporary measure establishing a terrestrial and/or marine area where restrictions and traditional rules apply.
- Code de l’Environnement de la Polynésie Française, art. LP.2122-1
Regulated fishing zones are managed in consultation with municipalities and fishers. This is supported by coastal fisheries regulations.
There are also many bylaws in French Polynesia which define management measures for coastal fisheries in specific areas. An example is the maritime space management plan (PGEM) on the island of Moorea.
