Consultative and traditional management
Different approaches are used in the three provinces of New Caledonia which, although not classed as community-based fisheries management, integrate local communities in local resource management. Co-management initiatives have been implemented with local fishers and traditional authorities in the North Province and Loyalty Islands Province while a consultative process with coastal fishers operates in South Province.

In New Caledonia, management powers of the reef and foreshore are retained by the provincial administration in consultation with local communities. For example, the Organic Law n° 99-209 1999 defines the distribution of marine resource management powers between the provinces and the Government of New Caledonia. Co-management initiatives can be implemented with local fishers and traditional authorities in accordance with provincial authorities. For example, sea cucumber co-management in the North Province has been formalised in legislation in the North Province Deliberation n° 2014-316/APN (Kan-Gunu) 2014. The environment code 2008 provides for sustainable management areas and a fisheries regulation monitoring committee.
