Locally-managed marine areas (LMMA)
In Tuvalu, the locally-managed marine areas approach (LMMA) is used. Island Councils (Kaupule) set the management rules for their islands and are responsible for the management of the conservation area. Tuvalu Government’s Fisheries Department supports the Island Council and the traditional leaders in managing the coastal fisheries and, in consultation with members of the community, in preparing a coastal fisheries management plan.

The Falekaupule Act 1997 empowers the traditional assembly of each island to manage their coastal fisheries. Areas, including marine areas within the territorial sea, can be declared conservation areas by the Minister of Natural Resources and Fisheries under the Conservation Areas Act 1999. The Kaupule may enter into marine conservation agreements to manage conservation areas.
- Falekaupule Act 1997 – see sections 4, 40, and schedule 3, paragraph 1 (n) and (o)
- Conservation Area Act 1999 – see sections 6-9

There is no national policy, but Funafuti has published its management plan.
