Locally-managed marine areas (LMMA)
Locally-managed marine areas is the system employed in Fiji to achieve sustainable use and management of coastal fisheries. Established in 2001, the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network (FLMMA) is coordinated by government, non-government and community partners and works to support sustainable development and the achievement of national policy objectives. This co-management system is based on the traditional fishing rights of local communities.

The Fisheries Act of 1941 recognises customary fishing rights of mataqali (traditional clans) in their traditional fishing grounds (qoliqoli) (section 13) and the managed areas registered by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Through the registration of customary fishing rights, the local communities harvest and manage their marine resources adjacent to them. This Fisheries Act was then further amended by the Offshore Fisheries Management Act 2012 which was implemented by the Offshore Fisheries Management Regulations of 2014.
