Community-based resource management
In Solomon Islands, community-based resource management (CBRM) is the tool used for community fisheries management. This is supported by legislation which allows communities to develop and implement their community fisheries management plans in consultation with the Director and Provincial Executive.
The CBRM section of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources supports resource users and owners through awareness activities, development of community fisheries management plans, trainings and monitoring.

The legislation allows for co-management agreements that mean customary rights holders have legally enforceable rights to manage their traditional marine areas. Under the Fisheries Management Act 2015, community fisheries management plans may establish community marine protected areas and marine managed areas. The community fisheries management plan can be accepted and published in the Gazette by the Minister, meaning that its management measures have legal status.
